Seminar

What is the environmental impact of AI?

Every AI prompt draws electricity, uses water to cool servers and wears down hardware. Across billions of users, that adds up to one of the fastest-growing sources of energy demand in the world. Drawing on the latest published research, this seminar looks at how AI affects the environment and why, and where things stand as the UK builds more data centres. It then turns to what we can hope for: where AI is helping climate and environmental work, and whether running AI locally could be part of the answer.

A 40-minute talk on the environmental impact of AI, followed by 20 minutes on the hopes for AI and local AI, including a live demo of what an AI model running on a laptop can do. No technical background needed.

Live local AI demo

The talk is followed by a live demo of what an AI model running on an ordinary laptop can do, and a look at whether local AI could be part of the answer. No technical background needed. Please register with your university email where applicable.
